My Critical Research Question is: 'To what extent do newspapers and broadcast news create a moral panic through their representation of crimes against children.'
After studying Crime and the Media and Advertising, I came to the conclusion that I wanted to research a question on Crime and the Media. this was because I felt that this topic was more interesting to me, and that i was able to become specific in my research.
As i have studied the disappearance of childhood in Sociology, I decided that it would interests me to look at the disappearance of childhood because of the moral panic that is created by the media.
My question started out as: 'To what extent do the media create a moral panic around children.' however, this seemed too broad as a topic. Therefore, I specified it further by looking at newspapers and broadcast news, and to what extent they create a moral panic when reporting the news. This change has made my question a lot easier to research and evaluate, and giving me just enough to write about.
As my first stages of research, I have been collecting articles in this subject, from my daily newspaper. I will continue to do so, and look at various other sources from tabloids to broadsheets, to get a combination of views and reporting styles.
