Secondary Research - Newspapers

With the news of Baby P's fatal lack of social services' help, which hit the headlines in early November 2008, I feel like this is the perfect story to cover from different newspapers and broadcast news. There has already been huge media coverage on this story, and there seems to be conflicting opinions of the source of the child's death.

As suspected their has been huge media coverage by tabloid newspapers like The Sun and The Daily Star, complaining about the failure of Haringey, North London's social services department. With The Guardian taking the opposite side, and protecting the social workers, there seems to be some kind of row over who should be blamed for the child's death.

I also have a newspaper article from The Sun newspaper.

My Critical Research Question...

My Critical Research Question is: 'To what extent do newspapers and broadcast news create a moral panic through their representation of crimes against children.'

After studying Crime and the Media and Advertising, I came to the conclusion that I wanted to research a question on Crime and the Media. this was because I felt that this topic was more interesting to me, and that i was able to become specific in my research.

As i have studied the disappearance of childhood in Sociology, I decided that it would interests me to look at the disappearance of childhood because of the moral panic that is created by the media.

My question started out as: 'To what extent do the media create a moral panic around children.' however, this seemed too broad as a topic. Therefore, I specified it further by looking at newspapers and broadcast news, and to what extent they create a moral panic when reporting the news. This change has made my question a lot easier to research and evaluate, and giving me just enough to write about.

As my first stages of research, I have been collecting articles in this subject, from my daily newspaper. I will continue to do so, and look at various other sources from tabloids to broadsheets, to get a combination of views and reporting styles.
